The Owls Head Village Library Association founded in 1927, owns and maintains the Owls Head Library. Its Board of Directors, elected annually, not only oversees the library building but plans and implements library services and programs to benefit the Owls Head community.
The OHVL provides a center for information and learning resources for the Owls Head community. The OHVL is for learning, for a potential gathering place and to support the intellectual life of Owls Head now and in the future. Quiet conversation is welcome in our library. All are welcome in the OHVL.

Owls Head was visited by French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1605. In 1759, sailors believed the rocky coastline resembled the head and neck of an owl—giving the town its name. Owls Head officially became a town on July 9, 1921.
In October 1927, the Owls Head Village Library Association was formed. Land was purchased for $50 by the Baptist Church pastor, and volunteers constructed the building. Through donations and fundraising events, the library loaned its first books in February 1928.
The library has been guided by dedicated librarians: Mrs. Celia Leadbetter, Miss Winifred Fitch (until 1968), Mrs. Julie Hill, and Mrs. Mary Dyer—honored with the children’s room named for her. Mrs. Deen Carafelli served from 1998 to 2020, followed by Pat Stephen through 2023.
The Owls Head Village Library remains a volunteer-run organization, supported by the Town of Owls Head and private donations. Our current librarian is Pat Martin, continuing a century-long tradition of community-driven learning.
